1. Revelation 6:1-17 Horses and portraits of the Apocalypse
This content is being developed.

2. Revelation 6:1-17 Horses and portraits of the Apocalypse
The Four horsemen of the Apocalypse appear in Revelation 6. One painting is by Viktor Vasnetsov in 1867. Similar illusions were in Ezekiel and Zechariah.
This content looks at Revelation 6. The name "apocalypse" comes from the name of the book of Revelation in Greek. The "four" "beasts" as "animals" were introduced in the previous chapter. How people see and talk about colors has changed over time and by location/culture.

3. Horses
Add/Subtract Color Models

The full name of Revelation is the Apocalypse (revealing) of John (from Jesus Christ).

The horse colors of the Apocalypse are white, red, black and pale/green. Anything else would be a "horse of another color". How people see and talk about colors has changed over time and by location/culture.

4. Revelation 6:1 One
Verse routeRevelation 6:1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι ειδον οτε ηνοιξεν το αρνιον μιαν εκ των επτα σφραγιδων και ηκουσα ενος εκ των τεσσαρων ζωων λεγοντος ως φωνη βροντης ερχου [gnt]
Verse routevidiagnusseptem signaculisaudivi unumquattuor animalibusvocemveni [v]

The "one" in this verse appears twice, once in the masculine grammatical form and once in the feminine grammatical form.

Verse routeκαι ειδον οτε ηνοιξεν το αρνιον μιαν εκ των επτα σφραγιδων και ηκουσα ενος εκ των τεσσαρων ζωων λεγοντος ως φωνη βροντης ερχου [gnt]
Verse routevidiagnusseptem signaculisaudivi unumquattuor animalibusvocemveni [v]

The Greek word translated as "of" is that of "out of".

The ancient Greek word "φωνή""voice, sound" comes from the ancient Greek word "φως""light" and the ancient Greek word "νους""mind". That is, a "sound" or "voice" is "light" into the "mind". The Greek word for "hear" assumes understanding. Otherwise, explanation is needed. Thus, the "noise" of "thunder" and, yet, a voice speaking is heard.

6. Revelation 6:1 Thunder

The ancient Greek word "βροντή""thunder" and is from "βρέμω""roar, clash, shout" and is onomatopoeic in that it sounds like what it represents. The modern Greek word "βροντή" (vron-TEE) ≈ "thunder".

Verse routevidiagnusseptem signaculisaudivi unumquattuor animalibusvocemveni [v]
Verse routeseuene seelisfoure beestisthundurand se. [wy]

Jerome adds the word "seven" in the Latin Vulgate which is not in the Greek. The Latin word "septem""seven" from which we get the month name of "September", named for the seventh month where March is month one.

Wycliffe uses the Latin Vulgate and not the Greek for his translation. The Middle English word "seuene""seven".

11. Aristotle: Categories
The surviving works of Aristotle (about 2,500 pages of English) were put into a somewhat logical order and given references such as [1a]. Here are the very first few lines of those works.

English: Things are equivocally named when they have the name only in common, the definition (or statement of essence) corresponding with the name being different. (Loeb#325, p. 13)
Greek: Ὁμώνυμα λέγεται ὧν ὄνομα μόνον κοινόν, ὁ δὲ κατὰ τοὔνομα λόγος τῆς οὐσίας ἕτερος, Aristotle: Categories [1a]
Aristotle defines an "equivocation", or "names being equal", using the ancient Greek word "ὁμώνυμος""having the same name" from the following words. Aristotle continues with an example. Note: Aristotle used a lot of pronouns. The English fills these out.

12. Animal portraits
English: For instance, while a man and a portrait can be properly both be called animals, these are equivocally named. For they have the name only in common, the definition (or statements of essence) corresponding with the name being different. (Loeb#325, p. 13)
Aristotle: Categories [1a]
According to Aristotle, there are two meanings for the same ancient Greek word "ζῷον""animal, portrait".

In Revelation 6, the KJV uses the word "beasts" but the Greek word that "animal" speaks. Is it possible for a "portrait" to speak? How about a flat-screen with an animation of an "animal" that appears as a "portrait"?

13. Revelation 6:1 Four beastly portraits
Verse routeRevelation 6:1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. [kjv]

This is not the Greek word for "beast" as in the "mark" of the "beast". Most uses of both words are in Revelation.

14. Strongs - living creature

16. Revelation 6:1
 All
KJV: And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
Greek: και ειδον οτε ηνοιξεν το αρνιον μιαν εκ των επτα σφραγιδων και ηκουσα ενος εκ των τεσσαρων ζωων λεγοντος ως φωνης φωνη βροντης ερχου και βλεπε
Latin: et vidi quod aperuisset agnus unum de septem signaculis et audivi unum de quattuor animalibus dicentem tamquam vocem tonitrui veni
Wycliffe: And Y sai, that the lomb hadde openyd oon of the seuene seelis. And Y herde oon of the foure beestis seiynge, as a vois of thundur, Come, and se.

17. Revelation 6:1 Come or go
Verse routeRevelation 6:1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι ειδον οτε ηνοιξεν το αρνιον μιαν εκ των επτα σφραγιδων και ηκουσα ενος εκ των τεσσαρων ζωων λεγοντος ως φωνη βροντης ερχου [gnt]
Verse routevidiagnusseptem signaculisaudivi unumquattuor animalibusvocemveni [v]

The voice says "come" or "go". The Greek word just means movement. A context is needed to determine if "come" or "go" is more appropriate.

There are (at least) two ways to interpret what is said. In many places, the TR (Textus Receptus) adds "and see". This is an assumption that the translator knows what is happening and puts that assumption into the translation.

[Praise the Lord. Amen. Horse fallen into a ditch]

The children of Israel in the "desert" wanted more than "manna" as the "bread" of "life". They wanted "birds". Later, they wanted a "king". Today, many churches want a "pastor". Discuss the similarities and differences.
